The Insulation That Promises to Save Energy… But Steals From the Planet

When we talk about thermal insulation, it seems obvious: the more efficient, the better. Right?

In practice, it’s not quite that simple. There’s a hidden paradox: some of the most “efficient” insulators on the market carry such a high carbon footprint in their production that it takes decades to offset their own impact.

The most emblematic case is XPS (extruded polystyrene), whose manufacturing can emit up to 20 times more CO₂ than sustainable alternatives.

Meanwhile, materials like cork, sheep wool, hemp, and cellulose show that it’s possible to combine thermal comfort, health, and even carbon capture in every wall built.

👉 I explained this paradox in detail in my new YouTube video — and showed how to choose materials that truly make a difference for the climate.

UGREEN Featured at the Guararapes Summit, at MASP

Do you know the biggest mistake people make when trying to create sustainable architecture?

Thinking it’s enough to just choose an “eco-friendly” material.

But what if that material came from another continent, with high CO₂ emissions from transport?
Or generated toxic waste during production?
Or can’t be recycled at the end of its life cycle?

👉 Without traceability, you’re just speculating.

At the Guararapes Summit, we showed why reliable data is the new foundation of sustainable architecture — and how it transforms your project into something verifiable, traceable, and valued by increasingly discerning clients.

We presented case studies on how traceability:

  • Reduced embodied carbon by over 50% in real buildings

  • Prevents greenwashing and builds client trust

  • Helps with safer specifications and evidence-based decisions

Why does this matter now?
Because sustainability has become a selection criterion — and those who can prove their impact have the edge.

What else happened at the Guararapes Summit:

  • Patrícia Pomerantzeff (Doma Arquitetura): how to build real presence on social media

  • FGMF Arquitetos: creative interior solutions and innovative materials

  • Zanini de Zanine: the value of Brazilian design in the global market

  • WGSN: how emotions shape the colors of the future

And of course, Casa Guararapes, a real prototype of bioclimatic construction — with 80% thermal comfort and conscious resource use.

The City That Became a Sponge (and Saved Billions)

Have you ever heard of a sponge city?

Copenhagen didn’t just hear about it.
It became one.

After a historic flood in 2011, the city decided that waiting for the next disaster would be… too expensive.

Instead of relying solely on pipes and concrete, Copenhagen redesigned streets, parks, and squares to absorb rainwater — and return it to the city as leisure, health, and beauty.

The result?

  • Up to 70% reduction in flood risk areas

  • Estimated social return of up to €5 billion

  • More green, more life, more resilience

And the most surprising part:
To make this happen, the city had to change a national law. That’s how they were able to use water tariffs to finance sustainable solutions.

All within a plan still in progress — and already a global reference.
