Thomas House (USA): Thermal Comfort Amid Michigan’s Ice

Living in a lakeside home, surrounded by a bird sanctuary … in Michigan, it sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? I picture myself there — until I remember the brutal winters, with subzero temperatures that put any heating system to the test.
It was precisely in this scenario that UGREEN applied effective, sustainable, and welcoming solutions.
Meet Thomas House: a project where comfort, sustainability and thermal performance work hand in hand.
The UGREEN Method
Before suggesting any solution, we began with a detailed analysis. We used advanced simulations to understand how the house would behave under the local climate — temperature, solar radiation, humidity, wind … everything was taken into account.
What did we discover?
Excellent natural lighting - several rooms achieved 100% sDA
Visual glare - discomfort for residents
Inefficient heating - 36,861.08 kWh/year!
Limited thermal comfort - only the kitchen was at the ideal level
So, we formulated our plan!
We adopted a set of integrated strategies, focused on improving performance without sacrificing comfort:
Reinforced thermal insulation in walls in contact with the ground (the main source of heat loss)
Smart zoning: separating conditioned and unconditioned spaces
Reconfigured layout: adjusting the external deck to capture more sun in winter
Light controls: precise overhangs and “SilverScreen 205” blinds solved the glare issue
Results
60% reduction in heating consumption
52% lower HVAC energy costs
Over 80% of comfortable hours in the mais living spaces
Optimized natural lighting – even the exercise room gained new windows!
This is not just a beautiful or elegant house. It’s a living organism that adapts to the climate, respects the environment, and takes care of its residents.
Had you heard about the Thomas House project?
If you’re also looking for a smarter, more comfortable, and sustainable space, UGREEN’S bioclimatic consulting can turn your dream into reality.

What if death became a new source of life?!

That’s right — your death can be just as meaningful as the way you live!
This innovation that’s literally giving life after death is the living coffin, made entirely from mushrooms
Back to the Earth … literally
Traditional coffins — made of treated wood, concrete, and metals — block natural decomposition and even contaminate the soil with toxic substances.
“And what about cremation?” — It releases high amounts of CO₂ and other harmful residues.
The solution ? A coffin that’s grown, not manufactured.
Made from mycelium – the living root structure of fungi — this new type of coffin decomposes in about 45 days, and the body in just 2 to 3 years. Even better, it purifies the soil, turning pollution into nutrients. Now that’s a truly ecological farewell.
Bob Hendrikx, founder and creator of Loop Biotech (the company behind the coffin), puts it simply: “We are part of nature, not biological waste.”
A fungal revolution in the funeral industry
Created in the Netherlands, the Loop Living Cocoon has already been used in more than 2,500 burials. The idea is simple but powerful: transform the body into living compost that feeds the planet.
Each coffin is grown in just 7 days, with. no assembly line, using only local and organic materials. The result? Production with virtually zero carbon emissions.
On top of that, it’s lightweight, durable, biodegradable, and adaptable to different rituals — suitable for both conventional and natural cemeteries.

And what about the environmental impact — does it really make a difference?
When we compare key sustainability criteria such as decomposition time, CO₂ emissions, soil pollution, and land use, it’s easy to see the positive impact the living coffin can generate. The table below illustrates this clearly
Criteria | Traditional Burial | Cremation | Living Coffin |
---|---|---|---|
Decomposition time | 10+ years | N/A | 2 - 3 years |
CO₂ emissions | 39 kg + maintenance | 100+ kg | Negligible |
Soil pollution | High | None | Purifies the soil |
Land use | High | Low | Regenerative |
In other words, it’s not just about reducing impact — it’s about creating positive impact. Quite literally: cemeteries can become forests
